Back in early June, young Downy Woodpeckers left the nest and entered the world. The wonderful result was enjoying all the youthful exuberance of the young downies as they explored the world around them and looked for sources of food on their own.
Downy Woodpeckers are always more approachable than Hairy Woodpeckers, and this young male seemed more interested in looking for insects in this dead birch than in the human with a small black box in front of her face.

With his first molt, it will reappear on the back of the head,
just like dad's
