Last Night's Eclipse

Hope you didn't miss the Total Lunar Eclipse last night!

After being partly cloudy all day, the skies cleared up nicely before the eclipse started at 8:43p EST. It was also COLD out there - only 11 degrees, which made the tripod frigid and the camera battery and photographer cranky.

Here's a link to NASA's sight about the eclipse

Total Eclipse began at 10:01p, just in time for me to watch the Project Runway Reunion Show.  By the end of the show, the moon was beginning to be visible again.

What a great show in night sky!

Afternoon Moon

I stepped outside to get a shot of some ravens that were passing by, but ended up taking some images of the afternoon moon.

This image was taken just after 4:00pm this afternoon.  I've experimented with some digiscoping of the moon in the night sky before, but this one was taken with just a 12x zoom digital camera.  The moon was just so striking in the bright blue afternoon sky!

Digiscoping the Night Sky

Inspired by a post on the Beginning to Bird blog, one evening late last month I pointed my digiscope skyward.  Not at the birds, for it was almost 9:00 at night.  I pointed it at the moon which was about 4 nights from being full.

I was out again the next night, and the night after that.

My thanks to the author of Beginning to Bird for the inspiration and a lesson in Attention.

ATTENTION

  • Our eyes and ears should be open and alert to the natural wonders that surround us every day. Take time to look out our windows to see the birds that visit us and open our windows to hear them. Walk around whatever space we have to enjoy the birds in nature. Every day, work on improving our powers of observation.

ACCEPTANCE

  • Nature happens. We cannot MAKE natural things happen (or NOT happen). We can create habitats to encourage natural things to happen around us, but there are no guarantees.

RESPONSIBILITY

  • Birdfeeding comes with responsibilities to the birds and the environment we share with them. If you are unwilling to accept these responsibilities, you shouldn’t feed the birds. We also have a responsibility to share these natural wonders with the next generation.
