I've moved what was left of last year's nesting material over to a tree and now momma Red Squirrel has discovered some soft alpaca for the nest she's building.
Multiple times during the day, she has worked to extract the remaining alpaca fiber from the grapevine ball, organized her treasure in a neat little wad, and headed off to her nest in the woods.
Don't worry, soon I'll be hanging a brand new alpaca nest ball in a squirrel-proof location for this year's bird nests in my yard. I've seen Black-capped Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, and even Purple Finches gather nesting material to line their nest. I love nesting season!!

Ellen, yeah, that squirrel nest is better than my mattress!
Kimberly, glad you enjoyed!

I recognize that fiber! What fabulous photos! We have not seen the squirrels at the nesting ball. Thank you for sharing these and helping us get the word out about this wonderful little product, the Alpaca Fleece-filled Bird Nesting Ball, created by All Things Alpaca, LLC, and sold at Wild Birds Unlimited in Saratoga Springs and at WBU stores throughout the US and in Canada. She is a smart momma squirrel. Those squirrelets (or should it be "squirrelettes"?) will have a nice cozy bed. I'm a little envious on this cold morning!
