ATTENTION

Our eyes and ears should be open and alert to the natural wonders that surround us every day. Take time to look out our windows to see the birds that visit us and open our windows to hear them. Walk around whatever space we have to enjoy the birds in nature. Every day, work on improving our powers of observation.

ACCEPTANCE

Nature happens. We cannot MAKE natural things happen (or NOT happen). We can create habitats to encourage natural things to happen around us, but there are no guarantees.

RESPONSIBILITY

Birdfeeding comes with responsibilities to the birds and the environment we share with them. If you are unwilling to accept these responsibilities, you shouldn’t feed the birds. We also have a responsibility to share these natural wonders with the next generation.

150 days that a groundhog hibernates, all without eating!

37 degree body temperature during hibernation - down from about 99 degrees!

14 pounds a groundhog could weigh

8 mph is the top speed of a groundhog, too slow to evade a predator like a fox that can hit 25mph

5 heartbeats per minute during hibernation (down from about 80 beats per minute.)

2 breaths per minute during hibernation (down from around 16.)

1 pound of vegetation is how much a groundhog may eat in a single sitting. (Like a 150-pound man eating a 15-pound steak!!)

1/16 inch is how much a groundhog's teeth grow EACH WEEK

Rohrer - we are not really having a winter yet. I hope we get one and I really don't mind if there's still snow in March. Now if I lived where YOU do, it would be a different story!!

No clue about the breathing. That is really interesting. Hope your winter is shorter and that the little guy sees his shadow:)
