The Zen Birdfeeder

C.Barreau - could be just natural movement of the goldfinches since they move around a great deal in search of food each day. Or it could be old seed (niger dries out and they won't eat it), or perhaps a predator (cat in the yard?) If your seed is 2-3 months old, that's the next step I'd take. Good luck!

We usually have LOTS of goldfinches, but now there are none for at least 9 days. I even cleaned out the feeder and put in new seed. Is there a time when finches hide? and don't eat?

Lana - my goldfinch activity is so unpredictable too. I had 21 at the feeders yesterday. As far as working a lot..."cats away, mice play!" Have some fun too!

Although I hadn't seen goldfinches here for a while now & had assumed they were winging their way back to you, I spotted one at the feeders today. Perhaps a straggler? I'd like to keep a close watch this week, but I'm working a lot, since my boss is out of town.

  • Our eyes and ears should be open and alert to the natural wonders that surround us every day. Take time to look out our windows to see the birds that visit us and open our windows to hear them. Walk around whatever space we have to enjoy the birds in nature. Every day, work on improving our powers of observation.

  • Nature happens. We cannot MAKE natural things happen (or NOT happen). We can create habitats to encourage natural things to happen around us, but there are no guarantees.

  • Birdfeeding comes with responsibilities to the birds and the environment we share with them. If you are unwilling to accept these responsibilities, you shouldn’t feed the birds. We also have a responsibility to share these natural wonders with the next generation.
